Hutch Hutchens was born in 1919, so was the 1919 Baby Grand Chevrolet. In 1946 Hutch purchased the Chevrolet and restored it with his father. For years this classic automobile hasn't been run until this past year when Hutch's son Terrell started working on it. And now, on the 90th anniversary of both Hutch Hutchens and Baby Grand Chevrolet, the car is puttering down the streets of Lubbock once again.

Friday evening I met Hutch and Terrell as they were oiling up the car to take it for a spin. What a fun car - and what a nice father-son combination.

Retiree Dale Gober fills a shopping cart with bags of rice during his volunteer shift at the South Plains Food Bank. Gober volunteers at South Plains Food Bank several hours a week. Gober farmed for 30 years and then operated an irrigation repair business for several years before retiring in 2008. He said he misses some aspects of running a farm, but not the daily pressures. Grand Prix award winner Whitney Jensen

Utah native Whitney Jensen recently won the top honor at the biannual Varna International Ballet Competition in Bulgaria, one of the dance world's oldest and most prestigious contests. The Grand Prix has been awarded five times since the competition began in 1964; sixteen-year-old Whitney is the youngest dancer and first American to win the award. -- Wednesday, August 13, 2008. The Varna International Ballet Competition in Bulgaria has only given out four Special Distinction Grand Prix awards in its 44-year history.
Those winners are Vladimir Vasiliev, Rolondo Sarabia, Ivan Vasilev and Whitney Jensen.

Out of all those, Jensen is the only female and the only dancer from the United States to be awarded that honor, which was presented to her last month.

Jensen was also the sole recipient of the Ballet International Award, for highest achievement in ballet classics.

Still a 'fly boy' at 81

TAYLORSVILLE — Picture a 5-year-old boy looking on with awe at something he has never seen before:
A De Havilland DH-4 (the kind of plane that was used as a bomber in World War I) has landed in a nearby cornfield, and the pilot is taking people for rides.

"Of course, I didn't get to go up, but that piqued my interest," Douglas J. Shay says. "I've been crazy about airplanes ever since."

When he was 12, a friend gave him a model of a China Clipper. "That was back in the days when models were made out of blocks of wood. They gave you a general pattern, and you had to figure it all out." He's been crazy about models ever since, too.

Now at 81, Shay has had a good, long time to enjoy both passions, and he's not done yet. His Taylorsville home has two closets filled with kits — maybe a couple of thousand or more, he says — that he'd like to get to someday. (Read more of the related article: Still a 'fly boy' at 81)

Azcentral's 5A soccer POYs

My third assignment Saturday was a portrait shoot for an article on the men's and women's soccer player of the year in the 5A division. The location and time of day were arranged by the reporter (a cliff side overlooking phoenix at about 230 pm - not the best time of day for a portrait but it worked pretty well) so I arrived 20 minutes early to scope out the location. The photo request wanted portraits of the players w/ the city skyline in the back, and though they weren't the most creative, they worked. In the paper they laid them on the page facing each other like below.

After completing what was asked of me, I took some other portraits trying to tell more of the story. To me, the big story was that Kyle had set a state record for 160 goals during his high school career. His senior year I believe he scored 60 goals and had some 37 assists - pretty impressive. Shooting him from below and having him look into the light I feel gave him a 'king of the mountain' feel.

CEO of Kahala Cold Stone

This was one of those assignments where your boss calls you two hours before and lets you know you've been assigned to shoot it. I was actually familiar with the assignment because I had read about it the night before when browsing through the photo assignments for the next day. Little did I know the scheduled photographer would become unavailable and it would become my gig.

The assignment was to take a portrait of the CEO of Cold Stone ice cream. Because of unexpected traffic coming from an earlier assignment I arrived 15 minutes late and the reporter had already begun her interview; so I got to wait. I used the waiting time to quickly tour the facility brainstorming ideas. I was told I would have 15 minutes with Mr. Blackwell. The tour was helpful and I thought of 2 ideas - take him in the ice cream store near the front and get a fun photo of him with the ice cream (the details i hadn't really worked out in my mind yet), or do a portrait near one of their 30 foot colorful, delicious photos of someone eating ice cream. When I got to meet Mr. Blackwell I quickly told him my ideas and then his PR woman informed me that in fact Cold Stone had now become Kahala Cold Stone - meaning Kahala bought Cold Stone and many other food joints and so they wanted to avoid having the CEO in a photo featuring only one of the restaurants. It turns out their building will be remodeled in a month or so and will look more "Kahala"... but as for me and my portrait... I was empty with ideas. I tried not to panic. Touring the building before hand helped me think of a few quick ideas.

At first I took him to a wall of nice looking wood doors with foggy windows and these curvy, metal handles. I later went back to his office and played with some outdoorsy photographs of himself hanging on the wall. This is what came out. I was very thankful he was so accommodating and lent me more than 15 minutes.
